Why Book a Masai Mara Safari Package?

Book with the Locals

When travelers search “Masai Mara packages,” they’re really asking: “What will I see and feel once I’m there?”

The Masai Mara is part of the greater Serengeti ecosystem, one of the richest wildlife areas on the planet. It’s home to over 95 species of mammals and 570 species of birds, making every game drive unforgettable.

The Masai Mara National Reserve is the beating heart of Kenya’s safari experience — a wild, untamed paradise that defines the African dream.

Stretching across over 1,500 square kilometers of sweeping grasslands, acacia forests, and meandering rivers, the Mara is one of the best places in the world to spot the Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo — all in one breathtaking setting.

The Big Five and Beyond

The park is renowned for close-up sightings of:

  • Lions — the largest population in Kenya, often seen hunting at dawn.
  • Leopards — elusive and photogenic, usually resting on acacia branches.
  • Elephants — family herds moving gracefully through the grasslands.
  • Buffaloes — grazing in herds or cooling off in the Mara River.
  • Rhinos — rare but occasionally spotted in protected areas.

Other highlights include cheetahs, hippos, crocodiles, giraffes, hyenas, topis, zebras, and gazelles. Birders will love spotting crowned cranes, lilac-breasted rollers, and secretary birds.

The Great Wildebeest Migration

Between July and October, the Masai Mara becomes the stage for one of nature’s most spectacular shows — the Great Wildebeest Migration. Over 1.5 million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles cross the Mara River from Tanzania’s Serengeti, braving crocodile-filled waters and predators on both sides.

It’s dramatic, emotional, and awe-inspiring — a true bucket-list experience.

Game Drives: Morning & Evening

Most safaris include two game drives per day — early morning and late afternoon. The cool hours are when wildlife is most active, and your guide will help you track predators or witness herds grazing against golden light.

If you’re after a private, flexible experience, exclusive-use vehicles can be arranged for couples, families, or photographers.

Hot Air Balloon Safaris

A Masai Mara balloon safari at sunrise is one of the most magical ways to see Africa. As you float silently above the plains, you’ll spot elephants, giraffes, and herds moving across the misty savannah. After landing, enjoy a champagne bush breakfast — an unforgettable highlight.

We had an amazing time at both Taita Hill and Salt Lick lodges, our vacation was booked by Mercy at The Holiday Dealers Limited. Mercy ensured that everything run smoothly from the booking process, to the actual travel and to her sending a welcome home note to check in on how our trip went. Absolutely amazing!! I reached out to David at the last minute when I realized I had an extra couple days in Kenya. He responded immediately and gave me multiple options. Once I picked the package I wanted, he quickly made all the arrangements. They sent someone to meet me Wilson airport in person to give me details about what to expect on my Safari and even a gift! The tour guide/driver in the Maasai Mara was outstanding! I saw the Big Five and tons of animals — all unbelievably close. I got to see a cheetah make a successful kill and a pair of lions mating. It was wild in the best way. All the logistics were handled and everything went smoothly from start to finish. My night in the Mara was truly magical. I’m already thinking of how I can get back and do it again! And for sure I will use Holiday Dealers when I do. Thank you all so much!

The Holiday Dealers are the best! Use their services if you’re thinking to plan a trip to Kenya. I started planning this trip four months from when I wanted to visit with my family (2 young kids). David and his team were instantly responsive providing excellent recommendations on where to stay and options for what to do. The Holiday Dealers showed great flexibility when our flights altered from the original plans and when we wanted to make last-minute adjustments to our trip for the final day. Every driver we had in Nairobi and the Maasai Mara was on time and considerate. Notably, I’m so thankful for going with The Holiday Dealer’s recommendation to use one of their Maasai game drivers, Stanley. Stanley was fantastic and great with our kids. He showed us so much and we learned a lot about the animals, land, and the Maasai tribe. The Holiday Dealers attention to detail is top-notch. We always felt supported and they went above and beyond to ensure this happened.

Masai Mara Safari Packages and Prices

If you’re wondering “How much does a Masai Mara safari cost?” — you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common questions travelers ask, and the answer depends on how you choose to travel, where you stay, and how many days you spend in the Mara.

Road Safari Packages (from Nairobi)

Most travelers begin their journey in Nairobi and either drive or fly to the Masai Mara.
A road safari is the most popular option — it’s scenic, budget-friendly, and lets you experience Kenya’s beautiful countryside, including panoramic views of the Great Rift Valley along the way.

Popular options include:

  • 3-Day Masai Mara Safari by Road
    From USD 450–900 per person
    (shared vehicle, midrange accommodation)
  • 4-Day Luxury Safari
    From USD 1,200–2,000 per person
    (private Land Cruiser, high-end lodges)
  • 5-Day Classic Safari (Mara + Lake Naivasha)
    From USD 1,500–2,500 per person
(mid-luxury mix, ideal for couples or families)

Fly-In Safaris

For travelers short on time or looking for extra comfort, fly-in safaris are the perfect choice.
Flights depart daily from Wilson Airport (Nairobi) to several airstrips within the reserve, offering breathtaking aerial views of the Mara plains.

Each package includes return flights, ground transfers, guided game drives, and full-board accommodation in some of the region’s best camps and lodges.

Typical price range:
USD 1,500–3,500 per person for 3 nights in luxury lodges or tented camps.

What’s Included

Most of our Masai Mara safari packages include everything you need for a worry-free experience:

  • Masai Mara park entry fees
  • Accommodation (full board: breakfast, lunch & dinner)
  • Professional driver-guide
  • 4×4 Land Cruiser or safari van for game drives
  • Unlimited game drives and bottled water
  • Airport or hotel transfers in Nairobi

Not included: international flights, visas, travel insurance, and personal expenses.

Tailor Your Safari

All our packages are fully customizable — you can upgrade lodges, add destinations like Amboseli, Lake Nakuru, or Diani Beach, or even plan a private conservancy safari for a more exclusive experience.

No matter your budget or timeline, our team helps design a safari that delivers unforgettable wildlife moments, comfort, and authentic Kenyan hospitality.

Best Time to Visit the Masai Mara

The Masai Mara is a year-round safari destination, but each season offers a unique experience — from thundering herds of wildebeest to quiet mornings when the only sound is birdsong and the rustle of grass. Understanding the rhythm of the seasons helps you plan the kind of adventure that matches your pace and passion.

SeasonMonthsWhat to Expect
Peak (Migration)July – OctoberThe world-famous Great Migration takes center stage. Over a million wildebeest and zebra pour across the Mara River in dramatic crossings. It’s also prime predator season — lions, cheetahs, and crocodiles are on full display. Lodges are busy, but the spectacle is unmatched.
Shoulder SeasonNovember – FebruaryThis is the calving season, when the plains are alive with newborn wildlife and rich green pastures. It’s a photographer’s dream — soft light, dramatic skies, and fewer vehicles on the trails. Expect excellent predator sightings as lions and hyenas take advantage of vulnerable young prey.
Green SeasonMarch – JuneThe rains transform the Mara into a lush, emerald paradise. Fewer tourists mean quieter game drives and attractive rates at top lodges. Afternoon storms paint cinematic skies, and birdlife flourishes with hundreds of migratory species returning. This is the time for slow, soulful safaris and reflection.

Insider Tip: The Mara never sleeps. Even outside the migration season, its drama continues — lion prides defending territories, elephants cooling off in the Mara River, cheetahs scanning the plains for their next chase. Every sunrise brings a new story, every sunset a reminder of nature’s rhythm.

Whether you crave the raw energy of the migration or the serenity of the off-season, the Masai Mara rewards every traveler — no matter when you come.

Travel Logistics: How to Plan Your Masai Mara Safari

Planning your Masai Mara safari can feel overwhelming at first — but once you know the basics, it’s straightforward and stress-free. Whether you choose to travel by road or air, getting to the Mara is part of the adventure.

Getting There

By Road

The Masai Mara is approximately 225 km from Nairobi, and the drive takes about 5–6 hours, depending on your lodge location and road conditions.
It’s a scenic journey that passes through the Great Rift Valley viewpoint, local towns, and rolling farmlands — perfect if you enjoy watching Kenya’s landscapes unfold before you arrive at the reserve.

By Air

For a faster and more comfortable option, take a scheduled flight from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport to one of the airstrips inside the reserve, such as Keekorok, Ol Kiombo, Musiara, or Kichwa Tembo.
The flight takes around 45 minutes, offering stunning aerial views of the savannah and wildlife below. Upon landing, your camp or lodge guide will meet you for a short transfer to your accommodation.

Meet the Local Guides: The Heart of Every Masai Mara Safari Package

A Masai Mara safari is only as good as the guide who leads it. And in the Mara, it’s the local Maasai guides — born and raised in this wilderness — who turn a good safari into an unforgettable one.

Why Local Guides Matter

Local guides bring more than wildlife knowledge — they bring heart, heritage, and instinct. They don’t just know where the lions were seen yesterday; they know where they’re likely to be tomorrow, based on wind, tracks, and movement patterns passed down through generations.

They’ll show you:

  • How to read animal tracks and spot distant movement.

  • Hidden dens, shaded waterholes, and private patches of wilderness others miss.

  • The intimate behaviors of predators and prey that only time and experience teach.

Cultural Connection

Many local guides are proud members of the Maasai community — one of Kenya’s most iconic cultures. They’ll share their own stories of growing up in the bush, explain how wildlife and people coexist, and even introduce you to their villages if you’re interested in a respectful visit.

Expect:

  • Authentic storytelling

  • Language tips (learn a few phrases in Maa!)

  • Lessons in traditional tracking and bushcraft

Pro tip: Ask your guide about their most memorable safari — you’ll hear stories that rival the best wildlife documentaries.

 Trained

Don’t let their humble approach fool you — the best local guides in the Masai Mara are fully certified professionals, trained in:

  • Wildlife ecology

  • First aid and emergency response

  • Safari safety protocols

  • Photography assistance (they’ll help you get the shot!)

They also collaborate closely with conservationists and park rangers, staying updated on animal behavior and movements.

More Than a Guide — A Safari Companion

Over four days, your guide becomes more than just the person driving the vehicle. They become your interpreter of the wild, your link to Maasai culture, and often, your friend.

A Masai Mara safari with a local guide doesn’t just show you wildlife — it gives you stories you’ll remember for life.

Top Experiences in the Masai Mara Safari Package

A safari in the Masai Mara isn’t just about spotting wildlife — it’s about connecting with the land, the light, and the ancient rhythm of nature that beats through Kenya’s most iconic reserve. Every experience immerses you in the wild in a different way, revealing the Mara’s spirit beyond the Big Five.

Morning & Evening Game Drives

At first light, the savannah comes alive. Lions patrol their territories, elephants emerge from the mist, and the sun paints the plains gold. Evening drives are equally captivating — watch hippos wallow, hyenas stir, and leopards begin their stealthy hunt as the day fades to dusk.

Hot Air Balloon Safari

Float above the golden plains in near silence as herds of wildebeest and zebra move below you. From this breathtaking vantage point, the Mara stretches endlessly. As you touch down, you’re greeted with a champagne breakfast in the heart of the bush — a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Cultural Visits

Step into a traditional Maasai manyatta and meet the proud custodians of this land. Learn about their customs, traditions, and how they live in harmony with wildlife. These encounters are respectful, authentic, and often deeply moving — a reminder that the Mara is not just a park, but a living homeland.

Sundowners & Bush Dinners

There’s nothing quite like watching the sun sink behind the acacia trees with a cold drink in hand. As the stars emerge, enjoy a candlelit dinner under open skies, surrounded by the sounds of the wilderness — laughter mixing with the calls of night.

Photography Safaris

Whether you’re an amateur or a professional, the Mara’s light, landscapes, and wildlife make every shot extraordinary. Expert guides help position you for the perfect angle — from a cheetah sprinting across the plains to elephants framed by the rising sun.

Walking Safaris & Night Drives

In select private conservancies, experience the Mara on foot or after dark. Walking safaris heighten every sense — the scent of wild basil, the crackle of dry grass, the thrill of fresh tracks. Night drives, meanwhile, reveal the secret lives of nocturnal creatures — from bush babies to leopards on the prowl.

Every experience tells a story.

The Masai Mara invites you not just to see, but to feel — to listen to the heartbeat of Africa beneath the stars, to breathe in the stillness between roars, and to carry home something that stays with you long after you’ve left the plains behind.

Masai Mara Safari Package - FAQs

How many days do I need for a Masai Mara safari?

Most travelers find 3 to 5 days ideal. This allows enough time to explore the Mara Triangle, the central reserve, and neighboring conservancies — with time to unwind between game drives.
Shorter trips (2 nights) are great for first-timers, while photographers or migration enthusiasts often stay longer to catch key wildlife moments.

What is the best time to visit the Masai Mara?

The Great Migration (July to October) is the most famous period — millions of wildebeest and zebra cross from Tanzania’s Serengeti into the Mara.
However, the Mara is a year-round safari destination. From November to June, you’ll enjoy lush landscapes, excellent predator sightings, and fewer crowds — perfect for a quieter, more exclusive safari.

How much does a Masai Mara package cost?

Costs depend on the season, type of accommodation, and travel mode (road or air).

  • Budget safaris start around USD 450–700 per person for 3 days by road.
  • Mid-range safaris average USD 900–1,500 per person for 3–4 days.
  • Luxury fly-in safaris range from USD 1,800–3,500 per person for 3–4 nights in premium lodges.
All packages typically include game drives, park fees, meals, and transport.

Can I combine Masai Mara with other destinations in Kenya?

Absolutely. Many travelers pair the Mara with:

  • Lake Nakuru or Naivasha – for flamingos and scenic lakes.
  • Amboseli National Park – for elephants with views of Mount Kilimanjaro.
  • Samburu – for unique northern species like the reticulated giraffe.
  • Diani or Watamu Beach – unwind by the Indian Ocean after your safari.

We design custom multi-park itineraries that make the most of your time and budget.

Is the Masai Mara safe for tourists?

Yes — the Masai Mara is one of Kenya’s safest and most visitor-friendly destinations.
Professional guides, secure lodges, and community-run conservancies ensure you travel comfortably. As with any safari, always follow your guide’s safety instructions during game drives and bush walks.

How do I get to the Masai Mara?

You can reach the Mara:

  • By road: about 5–6 hours from Nairobi with scenic Rift Valley views.
  • By air: daily flights from Wilson Airport (45 minutes) to various airstrips near your lodge.

We handle all transfers to make your journey smooth and stress-free.

Safari Package and Beach Holidays:

Masai Mara, Kenya Coast, and Zanzibar

For travelers seeking the ultimate East African escape, safari and beach holidays offer the perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and luxury. From the iconic Masai Mara National Reserve to the pristine beaches of the Kenya coast and the exotic shores of Zanzibar, this region promises experiences that will stay with you forever.

Masai Mara: Kenya’s Premier Safari Destination

The Masai Mara National Reserve is the crown jewel of Kenya’s safari circuit. Spanning over 1,500 square kilometers, the Mara is famous for its Big Five—lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhino—alongside countless other wildlife species. The reserve also hosts the world-renowned Great Migration, when millions of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles cross the Mara River from July to October in a spectacular display of nature.

Top Masai Mara experiences include:

  • Game Drives: Morning and evening drives through the savannah for extraordinary wildlife viewing.
  • Hot Air Balloon Safaris: Enjoy a breathtaking aerial perspective over the plains at sunrise.
  • Cultural Visits: Engage with Maasai communities to learn about their traditions, crafts, and way of life.

Luxury tented camps and lodges provide comfort amidst the wilderness, making the Masai Mara the ideal starting point for any safari and beach holiday.

Other Safari Destinations to Combine with the Beach

Alongside the Masai Mara, Kenya offers a range of safari destinations that can be combined with a beach stay for a diverse holiday experience:

A safari in Kenya is more than just spotting wildlife—it’s an immersion in nature, culture, and breathtaking landscapes, offering unforgettable memories for families, couples, and solo travelers alike.

The Kenya Coast: Sun, Sand, and Serenity

After thrilling safari adventures, the Kenya coast provides the perfect retreat. With soft white sands, turquoise waters, and vibrant Swahili culture, this coastline is ideal for relaxation, water sports, and family-friendly fun. Top beach destinations include:

  • Diani Beach: World-class beaches with luxury resorts, coral reefs, diving, and snorkeling opportunities.
  • Watamu: A tranquil beach town featuring a marine park, coral gardens, and calm swimming waters.
  • Malindi: Combines history, culture, and serene beaches for a well-rounded coastal experience.

Whether you choose an all-inclusive beach resort or a boutique hideaway, the Kenya coast perfectly complements the excitement of a safari holiday.

Zanzibar: A Tropical Island Paradise

For travelers seeking an international twist, Zanzibar offers sun, sea, and culture just a short flight from Kenya. The island is famous for its pristine beaches, turquoise waters, and spice plantations, making it an ideal addition to a safari itinerary.

Top Zanzibar experiences include:

  • Nungwi and Kendwa Beaches: Soft white sands and calm waters perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and sunset views.
  • Stone Town: A UNESCO World Heritage site with historic alleys, bustling markets, and rich cultural heritage.
  • Mnemba Atoll: A marine sanctuary ideal for snorkeling and diving with vibrant marine life.

From luxury all-inclusive resorts to intimate boutique hotels, Zanzibar allows travelers to unwind and recharge after safari adventures in Kenya.
