A Journey Through Kenya’s Most Diverse Landscapes
Kenya is one of Africa’s most varied safari destinations, and this Kenya safari circuit has been designed to highlight the country’s incredible ecological diversity.
Over nine days, you will travel through several distinct ecosystems:
- Highland forests and waterfalls in Aberdare
- Semi-arid wilderness in Samburu
- Wildlife conservation landscapes in Sweetwaters
- Freshwater lakes and bird habitats in Naivasha
- Open savannah plains in the Masai Mara
Few safari itineraries offer such variety within a single journey. Each region presents different wildlife, vegetation, and scenery, making the experience constantly engaging and visually stunning.
From mist-covered mountain forests to sunlit savannah plains, the transitions between destinations create a sense of discovery throughout your Kenya safari tour.
Aberdare: Kenya’s Misty Mountain Wilderness
Your safari adventure begins in the cool highlands of the Aberdare Range, a dramatic mountain landscape covered in dense forests, bamboo groves, and cascading waterfalls.
Unlike the open plains typical of many African safaris, Aberdare offers a mysterious and atmospheric setting. The forests are home to a variety of wildlife including:
- African elephants
- Cape buffalo
- Giant forest hogs
- Bushbucks
- Leopards
- Rare bongo antelope
Many lodges in Aberdare are uniquely designed to overlook waterholes and salt licks, allowing guests to watch wildlife quietly gathering throughout the day and night.
This first stop provides a calm introduction to your Kenya safari, where the sounds of forest birds and distant waterfalls create a peaceful wilderness atmosphere.
The cool mountain climate and lush vegetation also offer a refreshing contrast to the savannah environments that follow later in the journey.
Samburu National Reserve: The Wild North
Leaving the highlands behind, your safari continues north to Samburu National Reserve, one of Kenya’s most fascinating and remote wildlife regions.
Located in Kenya’s semi-arid north, Samburu is known for its rugged beauty, acacia-dotted plains, and the life-giving Ewaso Nyiro River, which attracts wildlife year-round.
This region is famous for hosting species rarely seen in southern Kenya, collectively known as the “Samburu Special Five.”
These unique animals include:
- Grevy’s zebra
- Reticulated giraffe
- Somali ostrich
- Gerenuk (the long-necked antelope)
- Beisa oryx
Seeing these rare species makes Samburu an essential destination for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers seeking something different from the classic savannah safari.
Predators such as lions, cheetahs, and leopards are also frequently spotted here, often resting along the riverbanks or stalking prey across the open plains.
Samburu is also home to the Samburu people, close relatives of the Maasai, whose traditional culture and colorful attire add another layer of authenticity to your Kenya safari experience.
Sweetwaters & Ol Pejeta Conservancy: Conservation in Action
Your journey then continues south to Sweetwaters, located within the renowned Ol Pejeta Conservancy near Mount Kenya.
Ol Pejeta is one of the most important wildlife conservation areas in Africa and plays a vital role in protecting endangered species.
This stop offers a different perspective on your Kenya safari tour, focusing on conservation and wildlife protection.
Highlights of Ol Pejeta include:
- East Africa’s largest black rhino sanctuary
- The last remaining northern white rhinos
- A chimpanzee sanctuary for rescued primates
- Excellent sightings of elephants, lions, and giraffes
Game drives within the conservancy often reveal an incredible variety of wildlife within a relatively small area.
Unlike many national parks, Ol Pejeta also allows night game drives, offering the rare chance to spot nocturnal animals such as aardvarks, bush babies, and hyenas.
The backdrop of Mount Kenya, Africa’s second-highest mountain, adds spectacular scenery to this conservation-focused safari experience.
Lake Naivasha: A Peaceful Rift Valley Escape
After the wildlife-rich conservancies of central Kenya, the safari continues to Lake Naivasha, a tranquil freshwater lake located in the Great Rift Valley.
Naivasha offers a completely different safari atmosphere — slower, more peaceful, and centered around water-based wildlife experiences.
The lake is famous for its abundant birdlife, with over 400 species recorded, including:
- African fish eagles
- Pelicans
- Kingfishers
- Herons
- Cormorants
A boat safari on Lake Naivasha is one of the highlights here. Gliding across the calm waters, you may encounter pods of hippos resting near the shoreline while birds soar overhead.
Nearby Crescent Island offers guided walking safaris, allowing you to walk among giraffes, zebras, and antelopes in a safe and scenic environment.
After several days of game drives, Naivasha provides a refreshing pause in your Kenya safari circuit, blending wildlife, scenery, and relaxation.
Masai Mara: Kenya’s Ultimate Safari Destination
The final and most iconic stop of your journey is the Masai Mara National Reserve, the crown jewel of Kenya’s safari destinations.
The Mara is world-famous for its abundant wildlife and dramatic landscapes. Endless plains stretch toward the horizon, dotted with acacia trees and crossed by seasonal rivers that sustain life throughout the ecosystem.
This is where the legendary Great Wildebeest Migration takes place each year as millions of wildebeest and zebras move between Tanzania’s Serengeti and Kenya’s Masai Mara in search of fresh grazing.
During migration season, thrilling river crossings and predator encounters make this one of the most spectacular wildlife events on Earth.
Even outside migration season, the Masai Mara offers exceptional wildlife viewing.
Common sightings include:
- Lions and lion prides
- Cheetahs hunting across open plains
- Leopards resting in acacia trees
- Large elephant herds
- Buffalo and giraffes
- Numerous antelope species
Game drives here are often the most rewarding part of any Kenya safari tour, as the concentration of wildlife is among the highest in Africa.
Sunrises and sunsets across the Mara plains create unforgettable safari moments.

Extend Your Kenya Safari to the Coast
One of the greatest advantages of a Kenya safari is how easily it can be combined with a relaxing beach holiday on the Indian Ocean. After days of exciting game drives and wildlife encounters, extending your safari with a few nights by the sea offers the perfect way to unwind and reflect on your adventure.
Kenya’s coastline is famous for its powdery white sand beaches, swaying palm trees, warm turquoise waters, and world-class beach resorts. Adding a coastal extension to your Kenya safari itinerary creates a balanced journey — thrilling wildlife experiences followed by peaceful days by the ocean.
Many travelers choose to finish their safari in destinations such as Diani Beach, Watamu, or Malindi, where luxury resorts and boutique hotels offer the ideal setting to relax after exploring the wilderness.
Why Add a Beach Extension to Your Kenya Safari
Combining a safari with a beach holiday is one of the most popular ways to experience Kenya. After early morning game drives and full days of wildlife viewing, the calm rhythm of the coast provides a refreshing contrast.
A Kenya safari and beach holiday allows travelers to enjoy two completely different landscapes in one trip — the savannah and the sea.
Key reasons travelers extend their safari to the coast include:
- Relaxing on Kenya’s famous white sand beaches
- Swimming and snorkeling in the warm Indian Ocean
- Enjoying luxury beachfront resorts and spas
- Exploring coral reefs and marine parks
- Experiencing coastal Swahili culture and cuisine
This combination transforms a classic safari into a complete Kenya holiday experience.

How to Travel from the Safari to the Coast

Domestic Flights
The fastest and most popular option is a short domestic flight from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport to coastal destinations such as:
- Diani / Ukunda
- Mombasa
- Malindi
Flights typically take about one hour, allowing travelers to move quickly from the savannah to the sea.
Train Travel
Another option is the scenic Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) train between Nairobi and Mombasa. The journey takes about five hours and offers views of Kenya’s landscapes along the way.
Private Transfers
For travelers seeking maximum flexibility, private transfers or customized travel arrangements can be organized as part of a Kenya safari package.
Activities on a Kenya Safari and Beach Holiday
Adding a beach extension opens up a variety of relaxing and adventurous activities.
Popular coastal experiences include:
- Snorkeling and scuba diving in coral reefs
- Deep-sea fishing excursions
- Dolphin watching trips
- Traditional dhow sailing at sunset
- Beach walks along endless white sands
- Spa treatments and wellness retreats
For travelers interested in marine life, Kenya’s coastal waters are home to colorful reef fish, sea turtles, dolphins, and seasonal whale sharks.
Ideal Duration for a Beach Extension
Most travelers extend their Kenya safari holidays with 3 to 5 nights on the coast. This allows enough time to relax, enjoy water activities, and explore local culture.
Typical combinations include:

You begin with thrilling wildlife encounters in places like Samburu, Ol Pejeta, and the Masai Mara, where lions roam the plains and elephants move across golden savannahs.
Then, just a short flight away, the atmosphere changes completely. Instead of early morning game drives, your days start with ocean breezes, palm trees, and the gentle sound of waves.

Absolutely amazing!! I reached out to David at the last minute when I realized I had an extra couple days in Kenya. He responded immediately and gave me multiple options. Once I picked the package I wanted, he quickly made all the arrangements. They sent someone to meet me Wilson airport in person to give me details about what to expect on my Safari and even a gift! The tour guide/driver in the Maasai Mara was outstanding! I saw the Big Five and tons of animals — all unbelievably close. I got to see a cheetah make a successful kill and a pair of lions mating. It was wild in the best way. All the logistics were handled and everything went smoothly from start to finish. My night in the Mara was truly magical. I’m already thinking of how I can get back and do it again! And for sure I will use Holiday Dealers when I do. Thank you all so much!Posted on Google![]()

The Holiday Dealers are the best! Use their services if you’re thinking to plan a trip to Kenya. I started planning this trip four months from when I wanted to visit with my family (2 young kids). David and his team were instantly responsive providing excellent recommendations on where to stay and options for what to do. The Holiday Dealers showed great flexibility when our flights altered from the original plans and when we wanted to make last-minute adjustments to our trip for the final day. Every driver we had in Nairobi and the Maasai Mara was on time and considerate. Notably, I’m so thankful for going with The Holiday Dealer’s recommendation to use one of their Maasai game drivers, Stanley. Stanley was fantastic and great with our kids. He showed us so much and we learned a lot about the animals, land, and the Maasai tribe. The Holiday Dealers attention to detail is top-notch. We always felt supported and they went above and beyond to ensure this happened.Posted on Google![]()
